The Lantern Festival, also known as the YUANXIAO Festival, is a traditional Chinese festival celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first month in the lunisolar calendar during a full moon. Usually occurring in February or early March in the Gregorian calendar, it marks the end of the traditional Chinese New Year celebrations. During this festival, children go out at night carrying paper lanterns and solve riddles written on the lanterns. In ancient times, the lanterns were simple, and only the emperor and noblemen had large and ornate lanterns. In modern times, lanterns are decorated with many intricate designs. For example, lanterns are now often shaped like animals. These lanterns can represent people releasing their old selves and acquiring new ones, which they will let go of the following year. Lanterns are almost always red, symbolizing good fortune. In the early days, young people were accompanied in the streets in the hope of finding love. Matchmakers were busy trying to pair couples. The brightest lanterns were a symbol of good luck and hope.
